It’s the year 2080, and the world is in crisis. Floods, fire, famine, and disease threaten every living creature. Pope, an orphaned wild wolf, is forced to flee Yellowstone Wildlife Reserve after its devastation in the Fire of 2080. Heading north along the Rockies in unfamiliar territory, he ventures too close to the world of humans and is captured by dog breeders.
In captivity, he meets a man - Bill, and a wolfdog - Hume. Though they don’t share a common language, the three venture into the wild, depending on one another for survival and building a supportive hierarchy—without which, they would surely die. Struggling to find and hunt for food and facing a dramatically altered ecosystem, Pope, Bill, and Hume organize an unlikely makeshift pack and learn to trust each other. But when another wildfire separates the three and they encounter a real wolf pack, Pope must confront the painful consequences that the unexpected pack he’s created has changed him beyond recognition.
A lyric, poignant tale of a wolf’s ordeal to recover his place in the wild, New Animal is at once a sobering forecast of humanity’s impact on the natural world and an exploration of identity and the fleeting moments that leave us permanently redefined.
